Took this recently on my flight back to the UK. Was bored silly while waiting for my transiting flight in Amsterdam.
Anyway, it’s nearly a month since I returned to Newcastle, and also since I began my PhD work. Time sure flies. I’m beginning to worry, as I don’t seem to be getting good experimental results these couple of days. Reactions are just not working!! In fact, I have not done or discovered anything remarkable at all since I started my research. I used to think that three years was too long, but now I am beginning to worry that I might not finish on time.
I find that it’s quite hard doing a PhD. One must really have the passion and determination to do it (both lacking at the moment). Most of the time, I am left on my own, to do as I like in the laboratory. I usually reach university at 10 in the morning and go home at 5. I can take the whole day off, and no one will blink an eye. Of course I realize that I will be busier in the future.
It’s really scary that there is no one here to tell me what to do, except myself. I find that it is so easy to just lax. I have to set my own goals for these three years and make sure I achieve them within a time frame, since I am such a procrastinator. Otherwise, I will be crying on the final year of my research.
On a lighter note, I should be getting my salary next Tues. WOOoooooHooooo!! It just feels so good that I don’t need to take money from my parents anymore. And I can spend a little more now, since it’s my money. Feel a little bad though that I have not discovered any break through research work yet. As if they are paying me to do what I have been doing the last month…nothing.

Oh, and this was the plane i took to Paris. "EasyJet". Europe's equivalent to AirAsia.
