I no speako mandarin

It feels weird not knowing how to speak mandarin. Being a chinese, it is assumed that one should know how to speak it. Sadly, i don't. Do i feel that i am in a disadvantage? Certainly.
How many countless times have someone suddenly blabbed to me in Mandarin, and all i can do is stare at them with a look of confusion. I have practiced that look to perfection. It goes something like this:

X: ************
Me: Silence
X: repeats the above question but louder.(suspects that i am deaf)
Me: (Crooks my head to one side)
X: repeats the above question but slower.(suspects that i am dumb and deaf)
Me: Sorry, but i don't understand mandarin.
X: Oh, sorry

And with a final look of pity, quickly turns away. Arggg...It's my fault for not taking the initiative to learn earlier. I really have a strong urge right now to enrol myself in a mandarin class. After all, it will definately help in gaining employment later.

I went to the University job fair today. It's different here. They encourage students to work. And i notice at each display table they have sweets and chocolates for students. .yummy. Grab quite a few. Various jobs available.. part time, full time, casual work. Anyway, it was packed! I am hoping to work in Marks and Spenser because they are looking for Christmas staff.
I think i will apply tomorrow. Time for bed..yawn
