Extreme makeover-http://abc/go.com/primetime/extrememakeover/index.html
Last sunday i watched this program on tv,called extreme makeover.I have heard about the program prior to this but curiosity drove me to watch it on that fateful night.
One reason why i have never bothered watching the show before was i had to get up early to attend lectures the next morning, but since i'm on holiday.... Anyway, the program made an impact on me.For the better or worse,i do not know. Before sitting through the program,i admit that i had this prejudice against women who appeared in the show.Apparently, they were turned from 'ugly ducks' into 'beautiful swans'.
My views was that why are some people, especially women so vain that they would subject their body and face to such treatments. After all, wasn't it enough to have a pair of eyes,a nose and a mouth? To have sight and the ability to speak and hear when others could not.To be able to have full use and control of one's body, when there are many who would give all they have for the simple things in life we take for granted.Or how about women in war torn countries?Struggling to survive every second. Is looking beautiful really that important for the women on the show?
The program is called "extreme" makeover for a reason. From plastic surgery, laser eye surgery, dental work, body modification to make-up,haircut,wardrobe.. everyting is touched.Perhaps the most disturbing and gross part is plastic surgery.Society nowadays is much more acceptable to plastic surgery than ever, especially in the western world..readily embraced by hollywood stars . Botox has become an everyday word now.Once used only for medical purposes,it has found it's way into 'beauty clinics'.
I have digressed.Returning to my main topic. As i mentioned earlier i started watching the show with prejudice. However,at the end of the program somehow i ended up feeling happy for these women. I went wow..when the 'swans' were revealed to their friends and families. The change was unbelievable! The women looked gorgeous..every inch like a model. And it showed..from insecure socially shy people, they have turned into confident, beautiful, modern WOMEN.I guess the show has given these women something that they have never had and can only come from within..confidence.
With this new found look and confidence,i can only imagine how their life will change. But undenyably, for the better.Following their 'transformation' throughout the show was an experience itself. The emotions was overwhelming.Tears accompanied each 'transformation' as these women got closer to their dreams,to be beautiful.Something they had never even dared to dream or imagine they could be...until the show came and turned their life around.
So i guess the program is not all that bad as i thought it was.I now feel that it is alright to receive an 'extreme makeover' if one really needs it.But how do one define that.Maybe people with facial deformaties.
How about the rest of us who watches the show everyweek? What is it that draws viewers to it?For me, i guess it is the heartwarming feeling the show gives as well as the curiosity-waiting eargerly for the moment the women's new look will be revealed for all to see.
The need to look beautiful is every women's secret desire. This show is a testament to that,it is a satire of our community.Men prefer girls with pretty faces.period.The truth hurts but it is fact.Facial creams are selling like hotcakes, especially whitening products. It is no wonder, the promise of making one pretty without the need to go under the knife.I am a hypocrite,i admit. As a women,i too want be pretty, and i use shampoo which claims to make my frizzy hair straight n facial cream which is supposedly able to control the secretion of excess oil.
Pictures of gorgeous models are everywhere in the media.Girls are putting make-up at a younger age.Teenagers requesting plastic surgery for christmas presents. Is all these all right?
All of these i see happening around me.How do i feel about it.Confused.My feelings are all mixed up.Would i ever be on 'extreme makeover' if i was given the chance? Frankly,i do not know.
